Rohit Sharma ruled out of New Zealand ODIs, Tests – report

Rohit Sharma injury
by Wisden Staff 2-minute read

Rohit Sharma, India’s limited-overs vice-captain, has been ruled out of the ODIs and Tests against New Zealand with a calf injury.

Rohit hurt his calf while running between the wickets in the fifth T20I on February 2. He attempted to carry on after bringing up a record 25th score of over fifty in the format, but the pain forced him to hobble off in the 17th over of the innings, having scored 60 off 41 balls.

He didn’t return to the field for New Zealand’s chase, with KL Rahul taking over captaincy duties; Rohit himself was standing in for the rested Virat Kohli.

After the match, which sealed a 5-0 series win for India, Rahul had said, “Rohit’s alright, unfortunate injury, hopefully he should be fine in a couple of days.” However, a report from news agency PTI, which quoted an unnamed BCCI source, said that Rohit will take no further part in the tour.

“He is out of the tour,” the source said. “Right now, it’s not looking good. The physio is assessing him. We will get to know how bad it is, but he is not taking any further part in the series.”

India play three ODIs against New Zealand from February 5, before moving on to the Tests from February 21.
