Watch: James Anderson was strangled down the leg side by Neil Wagner, giving New Zealand an astonishing one-run victory at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

The second Test at Wellington ebbed and flowed, and when Anderson came in to bat, England still required seven runs with just a solitary wicket in hand. The veteran defended stoutly and even got a boundary away when he smashed the ball past mid-wicket. However, with two runs needed, Wagner had the last laugh. He pitched the ball short on leg stump, going down the leg side with the angle. Anderson tried to glance it fine past Tom Blundell and seal victory but could only manage to feather it through to the wicketkeeper, who dived to his right and completed the catch.

Wagner was thoroughly elated after winning New Zealand the game, whereas Anderson was visibly distraught. This was only the fourth occasion of a side winning the Test despite having followed on. The win also meant that the Black Caps levelled the two-match Test series 1-1, handing England their first defeat while chasing under Ben Stokes’ captaincy.
