Watch: Tim David hit a four off the final ball of the first T20I between Australia and New Zealand to seal a thrilling last-gasp victory, scoring 31 runs off 10 balls in a late innings cameo.

Australia needed 44 runs off 19 balls when David came to the crease. Mitchell Marsh was unbeaten on 63 off 35 balls at the other end with six wickets remaining. David hit his first two balls for singles before Marsh hit a six off the fourth ball of Lockie Ferguson’s final over, with the equation reduced to 35 runs needed with two overs to go.

David came back on strike midway through the penultimate over, and teed off to Adam Milne. He hit three consecutive boundaries, starting with a four before smashing back-t0-back sixes. The first of the sixes was a 98-metre monster down the ground. Milne’s figures by the end of the over read 4-0-53-1.

With 16 runs required from the final over, bowled by Tim Southee, the first three legal deliveries conceded four runs. David was on strike for the fourth ball which was a leg side full toss smacked for a very low, flat six by David. A quickly run two off the following ball saw David back on strike for the final delivery of the match, with four needed for an Australia win.

Southee attempted another yorker, but missed his mark again. David was able to clear his front leg and dispatch the ball along the ground through mid wicket. Glenn Phillips ran around from the square boundary and put in a desperate dive to stop the ball short of the rope. Despite managing to get to the ball in time, the ball went under his outstretched hand and smashed into the advertising boards.

Philips lay with his head in his hands in disbelief while Marsh and David embraced in celebration of a dramatic win.
