Watch: Arjun Tendulkar was smashed for 31 runs off one over at the IPL today (April 22), as Sam Curran and Harpreet Singh clobbered six boundaries in eight balls.
The over in question was the 16th of the innings and Tendulkar’s third as the Mumbai Indians bowled first against the Punjab Kings. With the two middle-order batters at the crease, Punjab’s innings had been stagnating, and they had reached 118-4.
Tendulkar’s over went wrong right from the start. His first delivery was in the slot at 124 kph, and Curran capitalised, banging it over long-off for an 83m six. Trying to prevent the same result from his next delivery, Tendulkar tried to bowl wider of the crease but went too extreme and had to bowl the ball again after the umpire signalled wide.
The next ball went another boundary. This time Curran slightly mis-hit his attempted cut but still managed to get the ball over Jofra Archer at short-third-man for four.
A single came off Tendulkar’s third delivery to bring Harpreet on strike, continuing the carnage. Tendulkar pitched the ball too full this time, Harpreet smashed a drive down the ground to bring up the fifty-stand with Curran.
He was then able to capitalise on a full toss from the next ball, picking up a flat six over backward square leg. The wheels were well and truly off for the young Tendulkar in his third IPL game.
A chest-height beamer followed, which Harpreet took four off as the umpire signalled a no-ball. Sending down the delivery again, Harpreet finished off the over with a pull fine for four.
It was the joint most expensive over in this year’s IPL and started an incredible finish for Punjab Kings, where they scored 96 runs off the final ten overs to post 214-8.
