With the first Test of the summer against Ireland on the horizon, some of IPL 2023’s England contingent will be heading back home in the coming week, but how have they fared in their respective stints in the competition?

Ben Stokes

After spending £1.6 million on Ben Stokes’ signature, Chennai Super Kings have only saw the England Test captain don the yellow jersey twice this season. Stokes did not exactly set the tournament on fire, scoring 15 runs from 14 deliveries across the two games, while his sole over bowled was sent for 18 by Kyle Mayers. The 31-year-old has a well-documented injury record in recent years, and has missed the majority of the tournament due to minor setbacks. Before flying out to India, Stokes made it clear that he would miss the conclusion of the tournament to prepare for the summer ahead.

Moeen Ali

Stokes’ Chennai Super Kings teammate Moeen Ali has enjoyed a more fruitful IPL campaign. Moeen has scored 114 runs across his 11 appearances this season, going at a strike rate of 134.11. The all-rounder has also enjoyed success with the ball, taking nine wickets at an average of 18.22, while keeping his economy below 7.50.

Sam Curran

After signing Sam Curran for a record-breaking £1.85 million fee, Punjab Kings have been seen a modest return. Curran’s stocks were high after an immaculate World Cup campaign, winning Player of the Tournament, but has taken just seven wickets in IPL 2023, that have come at an average of 55. The 24-year-old has accumulated 196 runs with the bat, Punjab Kings’ fourth highest scorer, including one half century. He also had to take on the extra burden of captaining the side in a number of matches early on in the tournament, as regular captain Shikhar Dhawan recovered from a shoulder injury.

Jason Roy

Only making six appearances in this years IPL, Jason Roy has blasted 228 runs at a strike rate of 157.24. The opening batter has also made two half-centuries, top scoring with 61 against Chennai Super Kings. It is safe to say that Roy has bounced back after his omission from England’s successful T20 World Cup squad.

Harry Brook

Despite scoring a scintillating – and unbeaten – century in the early weeks of the tournament, Harry Brook has found has debut IPL season a challenge. Removing his hundred from the equation, the Yorkshire player managed just 63 runs in eight innings at the top of the Sunrisers Hyderabad order. Brook has since been dropped from the SRH starting XI before he heads home for Test match preparations.

Adil Rashid

Adil Rashid has only featured in two IPL matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023, claiming two wickets in the process, both coming in the same innings.

Liam Livingstone

Liam Livingstone’s brutish batting approach has been showcased in India over the last six weeks, scoring 172 while striking at 163.80. The Lancashire man’s high score came when he fired a 42-ball 82 against Mumbai Indians, including sending England teammate Jofra Archer into the stands.

Phil Salt

Phil Salt has averaged 28 in the 2023 iteration of the IPL, with a mixture of high scores and single figure dismissals. The Lancashire man has departed for a duck in two of his six innings, although scored of 59 and 87 have brought balance to his numbers. Salt has also taken five catches as Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper.

Reece Topley

Reece Topley sustained another injury during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s of the 2023 IPL campaign, dislocating his right shoulder while diving for a ball. The left-arm seamer had taken 1-14 from his two overs, dismissing Australian all-rounder Cameron Green.

David Willey

Topley’s fellow left-arm seamer David Willey joined him at Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Northants man has collected three wickets during his four appearances, as well as a rare IPL maiden.

Jos Buttler

2023 has allowed Jos Buttler to play a more supportive role in his opening partnership with Rajasthan Royals youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal, often allowing his younger teammate to accelerate. Despite this, Buttler has still managed to score four half-centuries, coming agonisingly close to a sixth IPL ton with 95 against Sunrises Hyderabad. In the innings, the England white-ball captain demonstrated the ability to build an innings, striking at 100 for the first 20 deliveries before moving through the gears and putting pressure back on the attack.

Joe Root

After finally securing an IPL gig, Joe Root has only featured in two matchday squads. The England man is yet to bat after stunning performances from the Royals’ top order, while his two overs went for a respectable 14.

Jofra Archer

With hopes of an Ashes appearance slipping away with each passing day, IPL 2023 has been a tournament to forget for Jofra Archer. After a successful stint in the SA20, along with a return to international cricket over the winter, Archer could not build on a promising return to cricket. He took a mere two wickets in five matches at an average of 95, before flying home for a period of rest and recovery. Archer had previously left the Mumbai Indians camp to have surgery on his troubled elbow.

Chris Jordan

Archer’s former Sussex teammate Chris Jordan replaced him in the Mumbai Indians squad. Playing one game so far, Jordan took figures of 1-48 after Dinesh Karthik hooked his short ball straight to Nehal Wadhera on the boundary.

Mark Wood

Mark Wood enjoyed a fantastic start to the 2023 IPL, taking 11 wickets in his first four matches. Taking his wickets at an average of 11.81, Wood was the most dominant bowler of the early knockings on the tournament, although has not featured since. Despite this, Wood still sits only one wicket behind Lucknow Super Giants’ leading wicket taker Ravi Bishnoi. The paceman stated that he would miss the culmination of the tournament, flying home to witness the birth of his second child.
