Watch: Shubman Gill continued his outstanding run in ODI cricket with a record-breaking double hundred against the top-ranked ODI side in the world, reaching the milestone with three consecutive sixes off Lockie Ferguson.
Gill became the eighth man to score an ODI double hundred, youngest to do so in men’s ODI cricket, and the first against New Zealand in the format. His knock formed the foundation of India’s final total of 349-8. Remarkably, Gill was the only India player to pass 35.
Only 23, Gill also became the fastest Indian to reach 1,000 ODI runs in terms of innings during his double hundred, hit Ferguson for three consecutive sixes to move from 182 to 200 to end the 49th over.
Gill is fast establishing himself as one of the most-feared openers in ODI cricket. His double ton was his third century in the format since July. After 19 ODIs for India, he averages 68.87 with a strike rate of 109. Since the start of 2022, the numbers read 81 and 112.
