Watch: India make crucial breakthrough after Virat Kohli convinces new ODI captain Rohit Sharma to review

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Former India skipper Virat Kohli convinced Rohit Sharma to go up for a successful DRS after the latter was in two minds, unsure if Shamarh Brooks had edged behind to the keeper or not during the first ODI against West Indies.

Kohli, who did not have the best accuracy rate with the DRS as India skipper, got one right as he convinced new white-ball captain Rohit to take a review after a caught-behind appeal was turned down by the umpire. The fifth ball of the 22nd over by Yuzvendra Chahal ripped sharply, drawing Brooks forward in defence, with the edge going behind to the keeper. However, the on-field umpire turned down the appeal, and though Chahal was convinced it was bat first, Rohit remained unsure.

Kohli, who was fielding at mid off, however, ran up to and urged Rohit to go up to the third umpire, shouting in Hindi, “Rohit, pehle bat laga phir bat-pad ko laga. Out hai ye (Rohit, the ball hit bat first, and then bat-pad. This is out).”

Rohit turned to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant to ask for his opinion as well, who immediately shot back, “nahi laga (it didn’t hit [the bat]).” However, Rohit, convinced by Kohli’s assertion finally opted to utilise DRS, with UltraEdge showing a clear spike as the ball passed the bat, leading to Brooks dismissal for a 26-ball 12.

It was India’s third successful review of the match, having earlier successfully reviewed an LBW decision off Darren Bravo in the 12th over, and then getting Nicholas Pooran after ball-tracking showed a Chahal leg-spinner would have hit the middle stump during the 20th over.

The wicket of Brooks sunk West indies further in trouble, as they collapsed to 78-6 in the first ODI.
