Watch: Rohit Sharma displayed the perils of working on a Saturday after a hilarious moment of brain freeze saw him take an eternity to make a decision after winning the toss against New Zealand in the second ODI, in Raipur.
A historic day at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium, hosting its first-ever international match, got off to an amusing start at the toss. Rohit flipped the coin, with Tom Latham, match referee Javagal Srinath and presenter Ravi Shastri alongside. Srinath announced that India had won the toss, with Shastri, as is the norm, asking Rohit what he’d decided to do.
Rohit fumbled. He froze, kept staring in the distance, putting his hand on his head, trying very hard to remember what had been decided. He squeaked out an unconvincing “field first”, before pausing a little more, and then saying “yeah, field first”. All of this took just over 13 seconds. Latham, next to him, could only watch, baffled.
Naturally, those around were left in splits: in the background, Mohammed Shami couldn’t contain his amusement, and even the usually stoic Rahul Dravid was seen laughing in the distance.
