Watch: ‘A bizarre dismissal’ – Harshal Patel smashes own stumps to bring brisk maiden innings to an end

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: In his maiden international innings, Harshal Patel was out hit-wicket after an attempted cut shot off Lockie Ferguson went very wrong.

Up until the moment of his dismissal, Patel had been playing a good hand for India, sitting on 18 off 10 balls which included two fours and a six. However, in the 19th over of the innings he went deep in his crease to Lockie Ferguson and looked to cut him out to point.

Unfortunately for Patel, he had gone too deep in his crease, perhaps an effect of Ferguson’s extreme pace, and managed to only make contact with the stumps and not the ball.

The dismissal initially led to some confusion as pundits mused as to whether Patel had in fact walked having edged the ball through to New Zealand wicketkeeper Tim Seifert. But replays soon showed that he was in fact out hit-wicket in bizarre circumstances.

There were jokes made as well, with some suggesting that Harshal’s wicket-taking prowess extended even to his efforts with the bat.

India would go on to finish the innings strongly as Deepak Chahar took 19 runs off Adam Milne’s final over of the innings to see India end on 184-7.
