Moeen Ali, playing his first Test since the 2019 Ashes, dismissed Virat Kohli with a peach of a delivery on the opening day of the second Test between India and England in Chennai.
Kohli, batting at No.3, was undone by a ripper from Moeen off the second delivery of the 22nd over, failing to counter the sharp turn that the off-spinner gathered from the dusty day one surface. The ball, pitched way outside the off stump, cut in to Kohli from good length, sneaking past his attempted drive and crashing into the off-stump.
As the England fielders gathered to celebrate, Kohli stood his ground with a look of astonishment, having a quick chat with non-striker Rohit Sharma and possibly enquiring whether he thought the stumps were disturbed by the wicketkeeper Ben Foakes. Moments later, he was walking back to the pavilion, dismissed on a duck for the 26th time in his international career, but the first time by a spinner
It was Moeen’s first Test wicket since August 2019, and the fourth time he had dismissed Kohli in 13 Tests.
