Watch: Virat Kohli, known for being a safe pair of hands on the field, dropped Eoin Morgan at first slip, which almost led to a first-ball run-out for the England captain.

Off the previous delivery, debutant Prasidh Krishna had sent back Ben Stokes, forcing him to lob a catch to Shubman Gill at extra cover. The next delivery, the third of the 17th over, was a similar length ball and Morgan played at it.

The England skipper, suffering from a split webbing, pushed at the ball, but ended up giving a thick edge towards first slip. Kohli, stationed in the position, moved to his left in an attempt to complete the catch but grassed it while diving.

Morgan, seemingly, thought the catch had been completed, and left his crease. A feeble attempt at a direct hit followed; if the ball had hit the stumps, Morgan would have been well short of his crease, without having made much of an effort to get back. The shy missed the target, though Morgan was so far out of his ground that India had time for a second attempted run-out, which was also unsuccessful.

Kohli instantly got off the ground and shook his hands as if to clarify it was a dropped catch.

The missed chance did not prove to make much of a difference to the game, as Morgan only managed a 30-ball 22, falling to Shardul Thakur as England’s fourth wicket.
