Ben Stokes run out

Watch: Ben Stokes was run out after a Shreyas Iyer direct hit caught him inches short of his crease on day four of the second India vs England Test in Vizag.

Chasing 399, England put up a valiant effort on the fourth morning after getting off to a good start on the third evening. Starting the day at 67-1, England came out all guns blazing even as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Zak Crawley held one end together, scoring 73, before he was controversially given out lbw on review. Stokes came to bat at No.7 and started sedately, like he usually does. Along with Ben Foakes, he looked to rebuild for the seventh wicket before a misjudgment cost him his wicket.

Foakes got an inside edge off a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery to the leg side, towards square leg. Shreyas Iyer, standing at mid-wicket, swooped in to pick up the ball quicker than Stokes anticipated as he ran the first of the run casually.

Only when he realised that he was in danger did Stokes pressed on the accelerator. Having just one stump to aim at, Iyer hit the bullseye and replays confirmed that Stokes was just short of his crease.

Given the importance of the wicket, the Indian fielders erupted in celebrations when the decision was flashed on the big screen. Stokes’ (11 off 29) was the seventh wicket to fall, at the score of 220-7, as England’s hopes diminished further.

Earlier in the game, Stokes had taken a superb catch running backwards to dismiss Iyer in the second innings. Iyer would feel that he had his revenge with Stokes’ run out.
