Shubman Gill falls to Tom Hartley as poor Test run continues
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Shubman Gill holed out to mid-wicket to gift away a steady start against England in the Hyderabad Test, continuing his scratchy form in the format.

Gill has been under scrutiny for his inconsistent returns in Test cricket over the last year. Ever since his century against Australia in March, Gill has passed 30 just once in the last ten innings. At No.3, the position he has occupied since India looked past Cheteshwar Pujara, he averages 23.62 in nine innings with a high score of 47.

Along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gill was the overnight batter, ending the day on 14. With Jaiswal departing early, Gill combined with KL Rahul to navigate through the first session.

However, the partnership came to an abrupt end when Gill tried to slash Tom Hartley, on Test debut, through the leg side. He ended up sending it straight to short midwicket, where Ben Duckett snaffled an easy catch. He walked off with 23 off 66, having hit two boundaries along the way.

It was Hartley’s first wicket in Test cricket. At lunch, his figures read 20-0-97-1.
