Watch: James Anderson made an immediate impact at the start of the India first innings on day two at Ranchi, dismissing India captain Rohit Sharma for two.

England made an encouraging start to the second day’s play as Ollie Robinson passed fifty for the first time in Test cricket. His partnership with Joe Root was worth 102, England’s third 100-plus stand of the series. Ravindra Jadeja eventually cleaned up the tail, picking up the final three wickets in quick succession. Joe Root finished the England innings unbeaten on 122 as his side were bowled out for 353.

Anderson was straight into the action in the India response, accounting for the India skipper in the third over of the innings. Anderson dangled a delivery outside off stump to which Rohit prodded forward to only managing to feather through a straightforward chance to Ben Foakes behind the stumps. Rohit, a centurion in Rajkot, was dismissed for just two. It was the fourth time Anderson has got Rohit out in Test cricket; among seamers, only Kagiso Rabada has dismissed the India captain on more occasions.

The wicket was Anderson’s 697th in Test cricket as the veteran seamer, now 41, hones in on becoming the first fast bowler to take 700 in the Test arena.
