Opting to bat, India were reduced to 33-3 in the third Test of the five-match series, at Rajkot before Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja put on 204 for the fourth wicket.

Rohit fell for 131, but debutant Sarfaraz Khan took the attack to the English camp, bludgeoning 62 in 66 balls out of a partnership of 77. Then Jadeja pushed a ball from Anderson to mid-on and called for a single, and Sarfaraz responded.

However, Jadeja sent him back, and Mark Wood’s throw found Sarfaraz short of the crease, prompting Rohit to throw his cap in the dressing-room in anguish. After the day’s play, Jadeja would apologise to Sarfaraz on social media.

Jadeja flicked the next ball for a single to reach his hundred and brought out his trademark sword celebrations. Behind him, Anderson mimicked Jadeja’s act.

Anderson and Jadeja have a history that dates back to the 2014 series in England when the Indian camp accused Anderson of “abusing and pushing Jadeja” – potentially a Level 2 offence. The England camp, in response, alleged Jadeja had committed a Level 2 offence. Not much came out of that, though Anderson bowled brilliantly for the rest of the series and Jadeja lost form.

At Rajkot, Jadeja eventually fell for 112 on the second morning.
