Watch: James Anderson kicked off day three in perfect fashion, bowling India captain Rohit Sharma early in the first session before nicking off Yashasvi Jaiswal as England looked to stage a comeback.

India began the third day with all 10 wickets in hand and leading by 171. They then lost two wickets for two runs as Anderson worked his magic.

First he saw off Rohit, setting the 36-year-old up with a ball that came back in before wobbling the ball off the seam past the outside edge and knocking the off-stump out of the ground.

Next over he had another, nicking off first-innings double centurion Jaiswal for 17. Pitching the ball up and moving it away, Anderson invited the drive and took the edge, with Joe Root taking the catch at slip. India rebuilt thereafter, with Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill putting on a half-century stand.

Anderson ended his opening spell, which began on the first evening, with figures of 2-12 in six overs, to go with parsimonious figures of 3-47 in the first innings.

Anderson, now 41 years old, has an exceptional recent record in India, averaging 14.30 in the country since the start of England’s last tour, in the 2020/21 season.
