On the fourth day of the Hyderabad Test match between India and England, Jasprit Bumrah came in the way of Ollie Pope when the latter was taking a run, and shoulder-bumped into him. It was reported after the incident that Bumrah might have risked an intervention by the match referee.
Today (January 29), the ICC released a statement saying that the India seamer has been handed a reprimand for the incident as it constituted a breach of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
“Jasprit Bumrah has been handed an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first Test against England in Hyderabad on Sunday,” says the ICC statement.
“Bumrah was found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match.”
Following the reprimand, one demerit point has been added to Bumrah’s disciplinary record. Accruing four demerit points over a 24-month period incurs a suspension. For Bumrah, it was his first offence in a 24-month period.

“The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit,” ICC said.
“Bumrah pleaded guilty to the offence and has accepted the sanction levied upon him by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thus requiring no formal hearing.”
The incident had occurred on the fourth ball of the 81st over when Bumrah, in his follow through, took a small step to his right to get in the way of Pope who was running a single and bump into his shoulder.
A few overs later, he was seen talking to Pope about the incident and seemingly explaining his actions. In the end, Bumrah dismissed Pope for 196, stopping him from reaching a double hundred.
