The India-Australia white-ball rivalry has resumed within a week of the completion of the World Cup 2023, which saw Australia lift the trophy for a record sixth time after their six-wicket victory against the hosts.

With the 2024 T20I World Cup in sight, India have rested senior members from their intensive one-and-a-half-month World Cup campaign, naming only Prasidh Krishna, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, who is entrusted with the leadership duty in the absence of injured Hardik Pandya, from that contingent.

For Australia, Matthew Wade will captain the 15-member squad comprising the hero of the final, Travis Head, as well as Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis and Adam Zampa, with regular skipper Pat Cummins opting to rest along with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

India wrapped up the first match by two wickets, thanks to a blistering 42-ball-80-run knock from Suryakumar before Rinku Singh’s cameo (22 off 14) helped the home side to gun down 209 with a ball to spare.
