After injuries and personal matters caused significant disruption and changes to their Test squad in India, Australia’s squad for the ODIs sees the return of Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh and Jhye Richardson from injury.
Maxwell has played just one professional game for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield since he suffered a freak broken leg which saw him miss the entire Big Bash Season. Marsh also missed the entire Big Bash season with an ankle injury and says he is likely to play as a specialist batter in this series.
Josh Hazlewood, however, has not been included after returning home from the test squad with an Achilles injury. This decision was made with an eye to the upcoming amount of cricket in Australia’s schedule, according to selector George Bailey: “It would be great for Josh to be part of this series but we have taken a conservative view ahead of a very important winter in England of which he will be an integral part.”
David Warner, Ashton Agar and Pat Cummins have all been named in the squad despite flying home from the ongoing test series in India. Warner has a hairline fracture in his elbow and remains to be seen whether he will be fit in time. Cummins, who is due to captain the ODI team, announced this morning he will miss the third Test in Indore due to a family illness. It has not been confirmed whether he will return to India ahead of the fourth Test.
India will be led by Hardik Pandya in the first ODI with Rohit Sharma ineligible due to family commitments. It will be the first time Pandya has led the side in the format. Jaydev Unadkat also returns to the squad, alongside fellow pace bowlers
Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik and Shardul Thakur.
Ravindra Jadeja and Shreyas Iyer are also back in India’s ODI squad, with Jasprit Bumrah still absent as he recovers from his back injury.
Australia wrapped up a comfortable 3-0 win over England in their previous ODI outing in November, and a trip to India gives the squad the ideal preparation in the same conditions as the World Cup to be held in India later this year.
