‘He owns the turf – Shubman Gill puts on a classy show with maiden home test ton, Virat Kohli proudly applauds from dugout

Virat Kohli applauds as Shubman Gill reached his second Test century
by Oscar Ress 2 minute read

Shubman Gill scored his first test century in India, his second overall, on day three of the final test against Australia in Ahmedabad.

Gill reached his century on his 193rd ball at the crease as he swept Todd Murphy over short fine leg for four before being congratulated by his batting partner Cheteshwar Pujara and the rest of the team in the dugout. He acknowledged the crowd’s cheers with a bow.

The right-hander was brought into the side after the second test, replacing the out-of-form KL Rahul who mustered just 38 runs in his three innings this series.

India, thanks to Gill and contributions from Rohit Sharma and Pujara have made a good start in their first innings in the face of Australia’s 480 on what appears to be the friendliest batting surface of the series.

Gill, who took his international hundreds tally to seven with this knock, was eventually dismissed lbw by Nathan Lyon for 128. He did review the decision but it was unsuccessful and India were three down with 245 on the board.

The burden now falls on Kohli and his new partner Ravindra Jadeja to get their team within touching distance of Australia’s total while also leaving enough time in the game to force a result. India do hold a 2-1 lead in the series so a draw would be enough to win the series, having already retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
