The 2022/23 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will feature four Test matches, in Nagpur (from February 9), Pune (from February 17), Dharamsala (from March 1), and Ahmedabad (from March 9). The contest will stretch to five from the next edition.
India and Australia have been playing Test cricket since 1947/48, but it was only in 1996/97 that the contest was named after Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, the two leading run-scorers in Test cricket at that point. Since then, there have been 15 editions, of which India have won nine and Australia five, while the other was drawn.
India held the trophy until 1990/00, when Australia regained it. India regained it in 2000/01, as did Australia in 2003/04. Following a seesaw phase, India have been holding the trophy since 2016/17 by virtue of three consecutive series triumphs.
India have had two other separate runs of two consecutive wins before, in 1996/97 and 1997/98 as well as in 2008/09 and 2010/11. All four series were on home soil. Australia’s only such instance came in 2004/05 (in India) and 2007/08 (at home).
