During their last tour earlier this year, Australia had snatched the ODI series 2-1 despite losing the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1-2. Since India will host the 2023 World Cup between October 5 and November 19, the series will help Australia to get acclimatised to the conditions.
The ODI series will be played between September 22 and 27, at Mohali, Indore, and Rajkot. Captain Pat Cummins, who has missed most of the ongoing South Africa tour, is set to return as the captain of the 16-member squad.
A World Cup is fast approaching, and as always, Australia have upped their game by a few notches. Their performance in the white-ball tour of South Africa is a testament to that.
After a comprehensive 3-0 whitewash over the home side in the T20I leg, the Australian batters have provided glimpses of their ODI batting approach. Travis Head deserves a special mention for his regular powerplay blitzkriegs. He smashed 64(36) in the second ODI, and with David Warner, helped Australia race to 102-0 after 10 overs.
Australia lead the five-match ODI series 2-1, with two games still to be played.
India have been in a rich vein of form as well. They have cruised to the final of their Asia Cup 2023 campaign with Super Four wins against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The returns of key members like Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer make the team combinations look as balanced as ever.
