by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League has come to a close with Bangladesh winning their last ODI against Ireland yesterday (May 14) – Here’s all you need to know about the qualified teams for the World Cup, the total team points, and the final points table for the event.

The World Cup Super League was introduced after the 2019 ODI World Cup to serve as a qualifying tournament for the upcoming ODI  World Cup. It aimed at providing context to bilateral ODIs and also to give lower-ranked teams with an equal opportunity to compete against higher-ranked teams.

The three-match ODI series between Ireland and Bangladesh which finished 2-0 in favour of Bangladesh yesterday (May 14), was the last scheduled event in the competition. Now that the league has come to a close, the final World Cup, as well as the World Cup Qualifier spots, have been decided.

Total Points Earned by Teams

New Zealand have finished on top of the points table in the inaugural World Cup Super League with sixteen wins and 175 points out of the 24 matches they played. Defending World Cup champions England, meanwhile, finished just below New Zealand, with fifteen wins and 155 points out of 24 matches.

Bangladesh had a brilliant run during the cycle, finishing third with 155 points, on top of India, Australia, South Africa, and other more fancied teams. India, the hosts for the 2023 World Cup, finished fourth with 139 points, while Pakistan (130 points), Australia (120 points), Afghanistan (115 points), and South Africa (98 points) filled up positions five to eight.

Teams that have qualified for the World Cup

The format of the World Cup Super League was such that the top eight teams would directly qualify for the main event, while the bottom five teams will have to join five other teams in a qualifying tournament, to compete for the two other spots in the World Cup.

Consequently, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa have qualified for the World Cup.

West Indies, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and the Netherlands, teams that finished outside the top eight in the Super League will now head to Zimbabwe to play the Qualifiers. They will be joined by Oman, Nepal, Scotland, the United States of America, and the United Arab Emirates. These ten teams will fight it out for two spots in the World Cup later this year.

The Qualifiers begin on June 18, while the World Cup starts in October.
