Deepti Sharma on Lord’s run out: We had warned Charlie Dean multiple times

Upon the Indian team’s return home from England, Deepti Sharma clarified that the Indian team had warned Charlie Dean multiple times before running her out.

After being bowled out for 169 in the third women’s ODI at Lord’s – a “dead rubber”, for India had already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series – India reduced England for 118-9. But No.9 Dean and No.11 Freya Davies battled along, and England added 35 for the last wicket. Then, in the 44th over, Sharma noticed Dean leave the non-striker’s crease prematurely, stopped in her run-up, whipped the bails off, appealed, and won the dismissal in her favour. India won a series 3-0

Despite the fact that the television umpire, aided with the benefit of replays, ruled Dean out, the incident caused the usual stir associated with the mode of dismissal, particularly on social media. In a statement issued the next day, the MCC clarified that the match had been “properly officiated and should not be considered as anything more.”

When the Indian team returned home, the media asked Sharma at the airport about the dismissal. She responded: “Woh plan tha hum logon ka … baar baar hum warn bhi kar chuke the usko. Jo rules mein hain, jo guidelines hain, uske according hi humne kiya.

(“We had planned this, [but] we had warned her several times. We acted according to the rules and the guidelines.”)

Sharma also clarified that they had informed the umpires before running out Dean: “Umpires ko bola tha hum logon ne, but still woh wahin par thi. Hum log kuchh nahin kar sakte the.

(“We did inform the umpires, but she continued to do it. We were left with little alternative.”)

Sharma also reflected upon India’s historic series win – it was the first time India won a series 3-0 on English soil – and how they wanted to win it for Jhulan Goswami, who retired after the series: “Har team ko jeetna hota hai. Last mein hum log chahte the ke jeetke unko achchha farewell de, to uske hisaab se jo as a team hum kar sakte the, hum ne effort daale.
