Michael Vaughan believes Dom Sibley is just the kind of player England “required for a long period of time” and that a small improvement in his off-side game would help him in the long term.

Sibley got to his second Test century in Manchester against West Indies, but used up 372 deliveries for his 120-run knock, which attracted criticism, with claims that he needs to expand his scoring options for England to draw more than win.

Vaughan is of the opinion that Sibley is “absolutely right” for England and the 24-year-old shouldn’t try to change his game. He does, however, want Sibley to improve his off-side game, which will help the England opener “put more pressure on the bowlers when he is set”.

“England is a funny team to follow because we criticise them when they play flamboyantly and there were so many on social media criticising the way that Dom Sibley was playing,” Vaughan told Cricbuzz. “He is absolutely right for this England team, that is exactly what England have required for a long period of time. Someone that just wants to stay in, value their wicket, bat a period of time.

“Give the likes of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Ollie Pope, these flamboyant players the foundation to go and play their way. So Dom Sibley deserves a lot of credit for just sticking to his game, I don’t think he should change. I don’t think there is too much wrong with him, maybe he could bring in an off-side game or two just to try and put more pressure on the bowlers when he is set and he gets in.

“England have played the right game here. They’ve played with patience, they have put up a score on the board, and now it is down to the West Indies. I believe there is a bit of rain around on Saturday, the third day. The West Indies, to me, looks like they are going to have to bat two-and-a-half days to try and draw.”
