England name 30-strong training group for West Indies Test series

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

England have named a 30-strong training group from which their squad for the West Indies Test series will be chosen.

With the group being a large one, there are a few new faces involved. Gloucestershire keeper-bat James Bracey, Essex middle-order batsman Dan Lawrence, Somerset quick Jamie Overton, Sussex seamer Ollie Robinson and Surrey left-arm spinner Amar Virdi are the players selected who are uncapped in any format.

Somerset all-rounder Lewis Gregory, Lancashire quick Saqib Mahmood, and Lancashire leg-spinner Matt Parkinson have won white-ball caps but not Test caps.

Of the players with Test experience, the most notable selections are Moeen Ali, who took a break from Test cricket ahead of the winter, and Keaton Jennings, who was part of England’s squad to tour Sri Lanka but is rated by some as a specialist in spin-friendly conditions.

Perhaps the most notable exclusion from the 55-man training group England named earlier is Dawid Malan, who made a Test century in Australia in 2017 and had a stellar 2019 across formats, but hasn’t played for England in whites since 2018.

England have also seconded several county coaches to help with their preparations. Lancashire head coach Glen Chapple will assist England head coach Chris Silverwood as bowling coach, Gloucestershire’s Richard Dawson will serve as spin coach, and Kent’s Matt Walker will assist Graham Thorpe as batting coach.

Former Nottinghamshire and England wicketkeeper Chris Read will serve as wicketkeeping consultant. Paul Collingwood, as reported, will serve as England ODI head coach during the three-match series against Ireland, if that engagement goes ahead.
