Sri Lanka batter fails to ground bat, watches ball onto stumps in ‘criminal’ run out v England

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Sri Lanka’s Achni Kulasuriya fell victim to a bizarre run out in the second women’s ODI against England, caught short with her bat hovering over the crease despite watching the ball crash into the stumps.

After losing the T20I series 2-1, England bounced back with an authoritative seven-wicket win in the first ODI. They continued to surge in the second game of the 50-over series, with all the bowlers getting in on the act to reduce the tourists to 106-9.

The only wicket not to fall to a bowler was the last one. Hasini Perera, who stayed unbeaten on 31, defended Sarah Glenn into the off-side, where Kate Cross fielded the ball. That should have been that, except Cross spotted the non-striker out of her ground, having left it in anticipation of a single, and threw at the stumps.

Even then, there should have been no drama, with plenty of time for Kulasuriya to return to her crease. Instead, she simply watched as the ball hit the stumps, replays revealing the No.10 hadn’t grounded her bat as she strolled back towards safety.

Daniel Norcorss, on BBC Test Match Special commentary, described it as “criminal”, while Lydia Greenway, on Sky, charitably called it “not so good awareness”.

However, that was the last act of proceedings as rain forced the players to leave the field, with a resumption not possible as yet.
