Angelo Mathews was omitted from Sri Lanka’s 24-man squad for the limited-overs series in England with Nuwan Pradeep earning a recall. Praveen Jayawickrama, who shone on his Test debut against Bangladesh, and Charith Asalanka, the former under-19 captain, were called up to the squad for the first time.
All-rounder Dhananjaya Lakshan, who shone in the inaugural Lankan Premier League earlier this year, has also been called up.
Sri Lanka’s selection policies recently came under fire after a public war of words between the head coach Mickey Arthur and a player. With pay dispute differences not resolved and Sri Lanka’s players agreeing to tour England uncontracted, all is not well in Sri Lankan cricket.
Mathews’ omission comes off the back of this with Sri Lanka sticking to a younger lot of players. Ashen Bandara, who played the recent series against Bangladesh, was the other player dropped from the squad.
England are yet to name their squad for the series that starts on June 23.
Sri Lanka have landed in England and are slated to play two tour matches after their quarantine. The first T20I is on June 23. The series consists of three T20Is followed by as many ODIs.
