Watch: ‘The plan has worked’ – Stuart Broad outfoxes Ryan Rickelton with ploy concocted by Ben Foakes

by Ben Gardner 3 minute read

Watch: Stuart Broad dismissed Ryan Rickelton lbw on the second day of the final England-South Africa Test, with the wicket the culmination of a plan seemingly suggested by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes.

The scalp left the Proteas precariously placed on 95-4, having been 83-1 earlier in the afternoon.

Rickelton, playing his third Test match, had been caught by Foakes off Broad for 11 in the first innings, and while the scorecard doesn’t show it, the wicketkeeper had a hand in his second-innings dismissal as well. He and Broad were engaged in a lengthy discussion before the start of the seamer’s eighth over, and Broad immediately ran to Foakes in celebration after the Rickelton was given out.

Rickelton was worked out over the space of four balls, with two outswingers followed by two seaming deliveries. Rickelton left the first two balls, but was forced to play by the third, which nipped back in, taking the inside-edge on its way to Rickelton’s pads, with England’s appeal turned down. The fourth was angled in, but seamed away past Rickelton’s outside edge to strike him in front of the stumps.

Broad indulged in a trademark celebrappeal, with Rickelton’s review proving in vain. There were chuckles from the commentary box at the futility of the use of the Decision Review System, but also praise for Broad’s skill.

“The plan has worked, he’s gone straight to Foakes,” said Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports commentary. “The long conversation with Foakes was outswing, outswing, and then full and straight and bring lbw into play.”
