Watch: Trent Boult bowled an irresistible new-ball spell, taking three wickets in his first 14 balls, including that of Jonny Bairstow who was removed courtesy of a flying, one-handed catch by Mitchell Santner in the second England-New Zealand ODI in Southampton today (September 10).

England were put into bat in a rain-affected game that was reduced to a 34-over encounter. Having lost the first ODI, they would have hoped to put up a better show in the second, but things didn’t go to plan.

Boult utilised the overcast conditions and the subsequent swing and seam on offer to destroy the England top order, reducing them to 8-3 inside the first five overs.

The first to go was Bairstow. Looking to flick an in-swinging delivery on middle and off, he got a leading edge that lobbed towards cover. The initial trajectory of the ball would have given Bairstow hope that it would sail over Santner but the New Zealand all-rounder timed his jump to perfection, stretching his left hand out and taking a stunning catch to end Bairstow’s innings.

Two balls later, Boult accounted for Root, trapping him in front with a classical left-arm seamer’s in-swinging delivery to the right-hander. Ben Stokes followed in the next over as he danced down the track looking to negate the movement that Boult was getting, only to spoon a catch to mid-off.

Boult’s first spell of four overs fetched him figures of 3-17, including one maiden. At the 24-over mark in the England innings, their score read 133-6.
