At the Kia Oval, Ben Stokes slammed 182, the highest score for England in ODIs. New Zealand managed only five runs more than his score.
Fifteen minutes into the match, New Zealand were happy about Tom Latham’s decision to put England in. Trent Boult had taken out Jonny Bairstow with the first ball off the match – Devon Conway took a sharp catch – and curled one back to bowl Joe Root.
At 13-2, Ben Stokes walked out to join Dawid Malan. By the time Malan fell for a 95-ball 96 (12 fours, one six), re-emphasising his claim as Bairstow’s opening partner ahead of Jason Roy (and Harry Brook’s in the squad), they had added 199.
Stokes marched on as Jos Buttler bludgeoned his way to a 24-ball 38. He eventually made 182 in 124 balls, going past Roy’s England record of 180 against Australia at Melbourne in 2017/18. In all, he hit 15 fours and nine sixes before Ben Lister had him caught at square leg.
England were eventually bowled out for 368 in 48.1 overs. The collapse was accelerated by Boult, who finished with 5-51, his sixth ODI five-wicket haul. Among active bowlers, only Mitchell Starc (9) has more, though Mustafizur Rahman has five. All three are left-arm fast bowlers.
Chris Woakes (3-31) and Reece Topley (2-31) took the steam out of the New Zealand chase by reducing them to 37-4. The only resistance came from Glenn Phillips (72 in 76 balls), while Rachin Ravindra hit out in his 22-ball 28.
Liam Livingstone (3-16) rounded things off in 39 overs to help England secure a 181-run win. The fourth and last ODI will take place on Friday, September 15 at Lord’s.
