Watch: England’s dream start to their one-off Test against Ireland continued, with Stuart Broad taking his third wicket thanks to a cunning leg-slip ploy today (June 1).

Harry Tector, in at No.4 for Ireland, hit his second ball straight to the man stationed behind square on the leg-side, falling for a duck as Ireland slipped to 19-3.

Broad was at his pumped-up best on the first morning at Lord’s, pinning PJ Moor lbw in his third over before striking twice in his fourth. First, Andrew Balbirnie edged to Zak Crawley at second slip, with the England opener taking an excellent low catch, and then seeing off Tector two balls later.

The Ireland 23-year-old is highly rated, with Test and ODI averages either side of 50 and three half-centuries in six international innings in whites ahead of today. However, England had done their homework, with a leg-slip installed as Tector came to the crease reaping instant rewards.

He made good contact with his second ball, angled into his pads, but hit it in the air, with Matthew Potts taking a comfortable catch. “Don’t you love it when a plan comes together,” said Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports commentary.
