Watch: Suryakumar Yadav, who, on Sunday, became only the fifth India player to score a men’s T20I hundred, hit as many as six sixes and 14 fours in his knock of 117 off 55 against England, with the highlight being an inside-out shot over backward point for a maximum.
Chasing 216 for a series sweep, India were in a spot of bother at 31-3 in the fifth over. Suryakumar, however, kept going at the other end, getting to his fifty in 32 balls before switching gears to adopt a more aggressive approach. The Mumbai Indians batter scored 15 runs off his next six balls and continued the carnage, with two more sixes and three fours, starting with a maximum over third man off the bowling of Richard Gleeson.
The second ball of the 14th over saw the England quick attempt a wide yorker, sending down a full-length delivery outside the off-stump. Suryakumar, however, dug it out with an angled bat, lofting it inside-out over backward point for a six, leaving the commentators, including former England skipper Eoin Morgan, amazed.
“What an incredible shot this is,” he exclaimed.
Suryakumar’s efforts, however, went in vain, as India lost by 17 runs, getting to 198-9 in their 20 overs. No other Indian batter could make more than 28 runs in the innings.
