Watch: West Zone captain Ajinkya Rahane sent his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal off the field during the 2022/23 Duleep Trophy final against South Zone.

Chasing a humongous 529, South Zone were reeling at 194-6 in the 57th over of the fourth innings on the final day of the 2022/23 Duleep Trophy final against West Zone, at the SNR College Cricket Ground in Coimbatore. At the crease were Ravi Teja (40*) and R Sai Kishore (5*).

At this point, West Zone captain Rahane asked his forward short leg fielder Jaiswal to leave the field. Earlier in the innings, Ravi Teja had complained to the on-field umpires, Navdeep Singh and Nikhil Patwardhan, about Jaiswal’s behaviour. Jaiswal, visibly unhappy, had little option but to oblige. West Zone continued to field with ten men on the ground for seven overs, until Jaiswal returned.

The moment soured a proud game for Jaiswal, who had earlier continued his stellar start to his first-class career with a career-best 265. West Zone went on to win by 294 runs.

The incident, while rare, is not without precedent. During a Twenty20 International against South Africa in Dominica in 2010, Sulieman Benn refused to comply to captain Chris Gayle’s instructions of bowling over the wicket. Gayle ordered Benn off the field.

“Benn didn’t have any injury, we asked him to do a job and he couldn’t deliver so it doesn’t make any sense,” Gayle explained at the post-match conference. The team management docked Benn his entire match fees.
