Hendricks was in to bat first for South Africa, partnering Quinton de Kock after Temba Bavuma temporarily flew home before the start of the tournament. New Zealand had posted 321-6 batting first, with Devon Conway and Kane Williamson retiring to ensure everyone got to bat in the warm-up fixture.

Boult sent down the first two balls of South Africa’s innings to De Kock, the first a dot and the second a single to bring Hendricks on strike. His third ball was a wide which kept Hendricks on strike. The next was a beauty.

Bowling from over the wicket to the right-hander, Boult pitched the ball on a good length and found huge swing through the air to bring the ball back into the batter. Hendricks tried to defend the ball but was unable to mitigate for the extreme movement. The ball beat his inside edge and rapped his front pad. The umpire immediately raised his finger as Boult appealed, seeing the ball would have gone on to thump into leg stump.

Hendricks had to depart for a duck and leave South Africa at 2-1 in their first over. Boult looks in ominous form ahead of the World Cup, a competition he has a fabulous record in. He’s taken 39 wickets in 19 games across two editions, at an average of 21.79.
