Watch: Steve Smith shakes head repeatedly after lbw decision overturned on DRS

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Steve Smith shook his head repeatedly after being given out lbw on DRS review in Australia’s 2023 World Cup match against South Africa in apparent disbelief at the decision.

Smith wasn’t the only one puzzled by the decision, with many on social media surprised by the ball-tracking projection. Nevertheless, Smith had to go.

The No.3 had work to do when he came to the middle, with Australia 27-1 chasing 312 to win, That soon became 27-2, and he and Marnus Labuschagne tried to rescue the innings.

They took the score to 50 before the moment of contention. Kagiso Rabada hit Smith on the pad as the right-hander missed a leg-side stroke. The appeal looked as if it might be going down the leg side, and the on-field umpire gave it ‘not out’. South Africa chose to review, with the ball projected to be going on to hit the stumps, overturning the decision.

Smith was not happy, and shook his head several times as he walked off.

“You can shake your head as many times as you want, but it’s crashing into the stumps,” said Matthew Hayden on commentary.

Later, Shaun Pollock, explained that a glitch in the initial display of the ball-tracking technology may have added to Smith’s confusion. Instead of displaying an animation tracing the path of the ball, as is standard, it only showed the final image from behind.
