Watch: ‘Shakib at his best’ – Bangladesh captain bowls set Jonny Bairstow after clever set up

Shakib Al Hasan bowls Jonny Bairstow with leg-stump beauty

Watch: Shakib Al Hasan bowled Jonny Bairstow in the Englishman’s 100th ODI today (October 10) in Dharamsala, deceiving him with clever set up to take out his leg stump.

Bairstow had already reached a half-century and put on a hundred opening stand with Dawid Malan. With Bangladesh fielding three spinners and the surface seeming not to take much turn, England looked set for a big score at 115-0 in the 18th over.

Shakib had bowled an economical spell to that point, into his fifth over having conceded 21 runs. The two balls he bowled to Bairstow before the wicket-taking delivery were key in making the breakthrough.

The first was a slow, flighted delivery which spun past the outside edge, before the second came down flatter and defended by Bairstow. Shakib sent down the killer blow quicker than the previous two, angled in towards Bairstow and pitching on middle and leg. The ball didn’t spin and found some extra bounce, cutting through Bairstow who tried to whip it into the leg side, and hitting the top of leg stump.

Shakib roared in celebration at the vital breakthrough, his 38th in World Cups. Speaking on commentary, Nasser Hussain declared the passage of play was “Shakib at his best”.

Bairstow’s half-century was his 16th in ODIs and his first since returning to the format after breaking his leg last year. His wicket left England 115-1 with Joe Root in to join Malan in the middle.
