Watch: Shaheen Afridi rips ball past outside edge to bowl key man Mahmudullah

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Shaheen Afridi cleaned up set batter Mahmudullah in the Bangladesh-Pakistan World Cup 2023 match at the Eden Gardens.

Shaheen steamed in to bowl the 31st over from around the wicket. On the fourth ball of the over, Mahmudullah played down the wrong line to a ball which pitches on a length and swung away from the right-hander. The ball crashed into the top of middle stump after kissing Mahmudullah’s pad on the way through. Mahmudullah had to return to the dressing room for 56 off 70.

As a result, Bangladesh slipped to 133-5 at the end of 31 overs. Mahmudullah had looked well set, making a half-century to go with his century against South Africa earlier in the tournament. He is currently Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in the competition, with 274 runs from five games.

Earlier in the match, Shaheen struck twice in his first two overs, sending Tanzid Hasan packing for a duck and vice-captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 4 (3). The left-arm seamer has taken 16 wickets in the tournament so far and is jointly tied with Adam Zampa as the leading wicket-taker in World Cup 2023.

Pakistan are looking to turn around their four-match losing streak in the tournament, having wracked-up losses to India, Afghanistan, South Africa and Australia. They currently sit in seventh place in the table after six games.
