New Zealand were reduced to 19-2 after Rohit Sharma opted to field at Dharamsala. Mohammed Siraj had Devon Conway caught for a duck, while Mohammed Shami, with his first ball of the 2023 World Cup, had Will Young (17) playing on.
Rachin Ravindra (75) and Daryl Mitchell then put on 159 for the third wicket, till date the highest partnership against India in this edition of the tournament.
Both batters targeted Kuldeep Yadav from the onset, hitting a six each in his second over, and took 48 off his first five overs. In his sixth, Ravindra played the first ball to long-on, and the batters ran a single.
Mitchell tried to reverse-sweep the next ball. It was probably premeditated, for the ball was too short and too quick – 114kph, or 70mph – for the shot, and Mitchell on the right shoulder. It surprised even Rohit, who laughed in astonishment.
Kuldeep recovered well to finish with 2-73. Mitchell eventually top-scored with 130 as New Zealand were bowled out for 273.
