Watch: Replays show ball hit stump, not bat after Mitchell Starc opts not to review caught-behind decision
Watch: Mitchell Starc walked off without taking a review for a caught behind decision which replays later showed as the ball clipping the stumps rather than his bat during the Australia vs Afghanistan match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today (November 7).
Chasing what would be a record total of 292 at the Wankhede Stadium in ODIs, Australia collapsed under the lights as the Afghanistan bowlers came after them one after the other.
Naveen-ul-Haq removed Travis Head in the second over of the innings, getting him caught behind from round the wicket. Mitchell Marsh and David Warner counter attacked for a bit before Marsh was trapped plumb in front for an 11-ball 24 in the sixth over.
Three overs later, Azmatullah Omarzai lit up the ground, taking two wickets in two balls and almost getting a hat-trick as Glenn Maxwell edged the hat-trick ball behind the wicket, only for it to land short of the keeper.
After the first 10 overs, Australia’s score read 52-4 with Rashid Khan yet to have a bowl. When he did, Australia lost a wicket off the very first ball of his first over, albeit in the form of a run out as Marnus Labuschagne was caught short of his crease.
Starc arrived at the crease at No.8 with the score showing 87-6 after 16.4 overs. His short stay was an eventful one. First, he inside-edged a drive off Rashid onto his boot which lobbed up in the air. Luckily for him, the ball had hit the ground before bouncing off his shoe.
The very next ball, however, he had to make the long walk back. Bowling from round the wicket, Rashid beat (as it was later proved) his outside edge. Ikram Alikhil, the wicketkeeper, took a stunning catch in the second attempt after spilling it in the first. The on-field umpire gave it out and Starc strangely walked back after having a brief consultation with Glenn Maxwell at the non-striker’s end despite Australia having a review left.
Replays later confirmed that there was no sound as the ball passed the bat. Instead, the sound came off the ball clipping the off stump on the way to the wicketkeeper.
With Starc’s wicket, Australia slipped further to 91-7. After 25 overs, their score read 126-7 with Maxwell playing a lone hand from one end.
