India’s run-chase of 200 got off to the worst possible start in their opening game of the 2023 World Cup as Kishan edged an outswinging half-volley by Starc to first slip to be dismissed for a golden duck on his World Cup debut.

Rohit Sharma took the strike in the first over as India would have fancied to chase down 200 relatively easily. After a single off the third ball of the over, Kishan came on strike. Starc, known for his new-ball prowess with the white ball, particularly in ODI World Cups, floated an outswinger outside off, tempting Kishan for the drive.

Kishan took the bait and went for the cover-drive without accounting for the swing and got a thick outside edge which flew to first slip where Cameron Green made no mistake.

This was Kishan’s first game at an ODI World Cup. Shubman Gill’s illness meant he got an opportunity to open the innings. However, this is not the sort of World Cup debut he would have had in mind.

India’s woes didn’t end there. Josh Hazlewood scalped two more wickets in the next over to leave India reeling at 2-3, giving Indian fans flashbacks of the 2019 World Cup semi-final where they were 5-3 in their run chase of 240 against New Zealand.

Earlier in the day, Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav combined to take three more to restrict Australia to 199. For the Aussies, Steve Smith top-scored with 46.
