Watch: Marnus Labuschagne run out with bat bouncing over crease after slow set-off

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Watch: A direct hit by Rahmat Shah ran out Marnus Labuschagne as Afghanistan inched closer to a historic win against Australia in the 2023 World Cup.

Australia were set a record chase of 292 by Afghanistan at the Wankhede to register their sixth win in a row in the tournament but they were rocketed early, losing four wickets in the first powerplay. They lost their fifth wicket in the 15th over, when Labuschagne fell victim to a direct hit as Afghanistan inched closer to a semi-final spot.

Rashid Khan bowled a wrong ‘un which went to the right of Rahmat, stationed at mid-wicket. Maxwell immediately set off for a run but Labuschagne was late to get going. However, a weak throw by Rahmat at the striker’s end seemed to have saved Labuschagne, who dived desperately as the direct hit dismantled the stumps.

The on-field umpires went up for the review where it was confirmed that Labuschagne’s bat was in the air despite being over the line. According to the laws, if a player fails to land inside the crease and has their bat in the air and over the line, they will be declared run out.

Labuschagne had to depart for a 28-ball 14 as Australia slumped to 69-5. A win for Australia will assure a semi-final spot, while an Afghanistan triumph would see them go up to 10 points, taking them level with Australia and above New Zealand and Pakistan.
