Watch: Marnus Labuschagne catches Trent Boult, steps on rope in 2019 World Cup final role reversal | CWC 2023

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Marnus Labuschagne caught Trent Boult but stepped on the rope in the process to concede a six in the Australia-New Zealand World Cup 2023 clash on October 28.

Josh Hazlewood steamed in to bowl the 49th over, with New Zealand requiring 32 off 12 deliveries. He pitched the ball on a length outside off. Boult, on strike, wielded his willow and launched it towards long on. Patrolling the boundary, Labuschagne plucked the ball on the edge but touched the rope as he was backpedalling to complete the catch.

Life came a full circle for Boult as the six rekindled a similar incident against England four years back during their heartbreaking World Cup final loss. Contrary to the outcome in 2019, where Boult was at the receiving end, he was awarded six runs this time, bringing down New Zealand’s required runs to 26 from 11 balls.

Australia, however, had the last laugh. Jimmy Neesham (58 in 39 balls) posed a threat of gunning down the target after Rachin Ravindra’s 89-ball 116 set a launching pad. However, Neesham was run out in the last over, and Australia won by five runs.
