Watch: Joe Root was bowled between his legs by Logan van Beek as an attempted reverse ramp went wrong during England’s clash against the Netherlands at the MCA International Stadium in Pune today (November 8).

In a battle of the bottom two teams on the points table, England won the toss and elected to bat first. Liam Livingstone made way for Harry Brook while Gus Atkinson replaced Mark Wood in the England XI. Netherlands made one change, bringing in Teja Nidamanuru for Saqib Zulfiqur.

England started their innings on a positive note before Jonny Bairstow top-edged a paddle sweep off Aryan Dutt in the seventh over to hand Netherlands their first breakthrough. Joe Root came to the crease at No. 3 with the score reading 48-1 from seven overs.

Together with Dawid Malan, Root added 85 for the second wicket with Malan doing the bulk of the scoring. Root found it tough to get any sort of rhythm going in his innings as he struggled his way to 28 off 34 balls, having hit just one four, before getting out in an ugly fashion.

Off the second ball of the 21st over, bowled by van Beek, Root shaped up to play his trademark reverse lap shot over third man. Van Beek, however, was quick to spot Root’s position as he adjusted his length. In the end, Root was in no man’s land as he could neither ramp it nor play it out, ending up getting nutmegged instead with the ball crashing into his stumps.

Root’s wicket started a fruitful period for Netherlands as they took three more wickets in the next ten overs. After 31 overs, England’s score read 180-5 with Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali at the crease.
