England had managed to restrict India to 229-9 having put them into bat in Lucknow, but lost their first wicket in the fifth over of the chase. Dawid Malan chopped a back of a length ball from Bumrah onto his stumps, which brought Root to the crease. The next ball was on a length and sliding across him, which Root looked to flick off his pads into the leg side.

However, he got in a tangle with his footwork and was rapped on the front pad plumb in front of the wicket. The umpire’s finger went up straight away and Root walked down the pitch to discuss with Jonny Bairstow whether he should send the decision upstairs. After a brief chat, he signalled that he was opting for the review.

When the umpire checked whether Root had managed to get any part of his inside edge on the ball before it hit his pad, there appeared to be a small spike on UltraEdge when the ball passed the bat. There was no clear gap between bat and ball, meaning it seemed as if there could have been some bat involved.

But, the spike had also been present in the frame before the ball had passed the bat, and the noise wasn’t clear. Given that Root had not reviewed the decision straight away either, it suggest he did not think he’d hit it. The noise could have been Root’s spikes scraping along the ground or another noise from the area.

The TV umpire decided Root hadn’t hit the ball and went through to ball tracking, which showed the ball thumping into leg stump. However, the UltraEdge had seemingly been enough to convince Root that he had in fact hit the ball and shouldn’t be out. He shook his head and gestured to the on field umpire as he walked off.

England slipped to 39-4 after Root was out, Mohammad Shami also taking wickets with consecutive balls. At the time of writing, they were 104-8 in 32 overs.
