Put into bat in the World Cup final, Rohit Sharma took India off to flying start. He hit Josh Hazlewood for two back-to-back fours in the second over of the innings to get things going.
Two overs later, he followed it up with a six and a four off Hazlewood to take India to 30-0 after four overs. Even as Shubman Gill departed from the other end, Rohit’s assault didn’t stop. He hit Mitchell Starc for a six on the last ball of the fifth over and was looking ominous.
Australia brought on Glenn Maxwell in the eighth over as their seamers found no help from the surface. Rohit didn’t face a delivery in Maxwell’s first over but when he came on strike in his second, Rohit wanted a piece of him.
The second ball of the tenth over was smashed over long on for six, followed by a punch through covers for four. Having already scored ten runs off the first three balls, Rohit wasn’t content as he stepped out to launch Maxwell for another six. This time, however, he sliced it towards point where Travis Head ran backwards and dived full-length to end his enterprising knock.
Batting on 47 off 30 balls, had Rohit stayed on for longer, it would have spelt doom for Australia. Ian Smith, on commentary, captured the importance of the dismissal as he said, “Is that a match-turned?”
India lost another wicket soon as Pat Cummins got rid of Shreyas Iyer to reduce India to 81-3 off 10.2 overs.
