Defending a low total of 213 against Australia, South Africa fought back well after a quick start by the Aussies. David Warner and Travis Head hit a flurry of boundaries early on, taking Australia to 60-0 after six overs.
However, the introduction of spin pegged them back as Aiden Markram struck with his first ball, cleaning up Warner’s stumps to get South Africa their first breakthrough. Kagiso Rabada then got Mitchell Marsh in the very next over to push Australia back to 61-2.
Regular wickets up until the 24th over ensured that South Africa were in the hunt. But a 37-run sixth-wicket partnership between Steve Smith and Josh Inglis brought Australia back to the driver’s seat.
However, an inspired spell of bowling from Gerald Coetzee, South Africa’s highest wicket-taker in this World Cup, gave South Africa two important breaks.
First he removed Smith, getting him to slog one across the line from round the wicket, only to sky it up for Quinton de Kock to take what might be the last catch of his ODI career. Then, just as Australia seemed to be getting away with the chase, Coetzee delivered a perfect yorker from round the wicket after softening Inglis up with two short balls.
Inglis, who had played well up until that point to score 28 off 49 balls, was late in getting his bat down and became the seventh wicket to fall, with Australia’s score reading 193, still 20 short of the target.
By the end of that over (40th), Coetzee’s figures read 2-40 off seven overs.
