Watch: Dawid Malan narrowly run-out in disastrous miscommunication with Ben Stokes after fast start

Dawid Malan run out

Watch: Dawid Malan was run out 13-runs short of a second century in the 2023 World Cup, after a miscommunication with Ben Stokes saw him fall inches short of his ground.

Looking to break their five-match losing streak, England opted to bat first in Pune against the Netherlands. Malan got them off to a flying start, reaching his fifty off 36 balls, 40 of those runs coming from fours. At the end of the powerplay, England had reached 70-1, with Jonny Bairstow the only wicket to fall having skied a ball from Aryan Dutt to short backward square.

The runs continued to flow for Malan as the innings progressed. He was on 84 by the 20th over, but the wheels started to come off for England after that. Joe Root was bowled through his legs by Logan van Beek, continuing his dismal run in the tournament.

In the next over, Malan turned Root’s wicket into a collapse. Facing Dutt, he played a full ball off middle stump to Van Beek’s right at cover point. He immediately set off for the run, as did Stokes at the other end but with slightly less urgency. Seeing Van Beek haring towards the ball, Stokes changed his mind a couple of yards down the pitch and signalled to Malan to turn back.

However, Malan was already halfway down the pitch, and had to put in a desperate dive to make his crease before Scott Edwards broke the wicket. It initially looked a close call, and the replays showed that Malan’s bat was just short of behind the line when Edwards took the bails off.

Malan had to walk back for 87, and England’s collapse continued with Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali out in steady succession. It wasn’t until a magnificent century from Stokes and a fifty from Chris Woakes that their innings recovered. England eventually set the Netherlands 340 to win.
