Watch: Angelo Mathews has posted the full sequence from Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal to his own arrival at the crease until the time his helmet strap broke, claiming it lasted less than two minutes.
The Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh World Cup match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi was etched into history books as Angelo Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to be dismissed timed out.
Mathews came in at the fall of Samarawickrama’s wicket, the fourth of the Sri Lankan innings, in the 25th over. However, just as he took guard on the crease, the strap of his helmet broke, forcing him to request for a new one before facing a single delivery.

This prompted Bangladesh, led by Shakib Al Hasan, to appeal for a timed out dismissal. The umpires confirmed with Shakib whether he wanted to go ahead with the appeal, which he did, and Mathews was given timed out for having not been ready to face a ball within two minutes of the last dismissal, as the playing conditions for the 2023 Men’s World Cup demand.
Mathews, however, has since come out and said that he was ready within two minutes and was taking his guard on the crease when his helmet broke and that common sense should have prevailed instead of Bangladesh appealing or a timed out.

Promising to post a ‘video proof‘ that he was ready within two minutes, Mathews has followed up on it by posting the entire real-time sequence from the time of Samarawickrama’s dismissal to the time his helmet strap broke.
According to the video, the clock didn’t strike two minutes when his strap broke.
