Two changes in both sides as Netherlands opt to bat first against Bangladesh | CWC 2023

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

BAN vs NED toss update: Netherlands opted to bat first in the World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh on October 28. Both sides named a couple of changes to their line-up at the toss.

The Dutch decided to bat in the first World Cup 2023 match at the iconic Eden Gardens. They brought in Shariz Ahmad, leaving out veteran all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe, who is ill. Also, Wesley Barresi replaced Teja Nidamanuru to bolster their batting.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed replaced Hasan Mahmud in the starting XI. Taskin had missed the last two matches against India and South Africa because of a shoulder niggle. They also brought in all-rounder Mahedi Hasan in place of Nashum Ahmed.

Both teams are reeling at the bottom of the points table with a single win in their bank. The Netherlands have fizzled out after pulling off the biggest upset of this World Cup, against South Africa, while Bangladesh’s campaign looks in disarray because of some lacklustre bowling and questionable batting order.

To make matters worse, the feud between their captain Shakib Al Hasan and ousted former captain Tamim Iqbal in the lead-up to the event catalysed scrutiny of the side.
